Artist’s Statement:

My paintings reference the artwork of the 17th Century Caravaggisti to heighten the
drama of my compositions and to infuse deeper meanings into the narratives.
They express the emotions, strength and energy, underlying my experiences as an artist, husband, and father.

I paint with oil-based pigments on panels I prepare by hand. These panels vary from carefully sanded oak to precious linen stretched over oak panels. I use traditional Italian and Flemish painting techniques, layering thin glazes of oil paint like the Old
Masters. The end result is a glowing, vibrant surface, with richness and depth.

After graduating in 1995, I spent the summer semester abroad in Todi, Italy, where I was introduced to masterworks by Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, my major source of inspiration. In 2008 I began studies at Studio Incamminati, the atelier of the famed portrait painter Nelson Shanks.

Education and Training:

University of Pennsylvania BFA in Painting/Drawing, University of Pennsylvania Art History Minor, Study Abroad Semester in Italy, Studio Incamminati
