Exhibition Title: A Rigid and Supple Progression
Artist Name: Xiao Min and Gao Shan
Dates: May 17 through June 15, 2008
Website: http://www.1918artspace.com
Exhibition Description:
1918ArtSpace presents a duo of emerging artists, whom after years of experimenting on a variety of materials, have found their ideal materials in steel and sponge.
Xiao Min uses fragile netting made of steel wire. He cuts, weaves, forges and sews the material. He presents flawless constructions after careful consideration of the dramatic effects that light could have on the works, for example "The secret room" and "Cityscape".
His partner Gao Shan cuts big bars of sponge in precision and finds a way so that her work "Friends & People" is vividly presented with wonder.
Xiao Min and Gao Shan's materials carry a huge contrast in a progressive experimental conversation. Their efforts extend from within sculpture genres of Chinese contemporary art, and their effort is an exploration of a variety of new materials.
