Exhibition Title: BASELITZ TO LASSNIG Masterpieces
Artist Name: Bazelitz, Kiefer, Lassnig, Lupertz, Polke, Rainer and Richter
Dates: until 25 May
Website: http://sammlung-essl.at/
Exhibition Description:
These artists' consistent and powerful work has demonstrated that painting is a medium that offers an infinity of forward-looking opportunities. All of them are resident in the Essl collection with seminal works created at central points in their artistic careers. This exhibition is a tribute to painting and these outstanding artists themselves.
Georg Baselitz always starts with the subject but concentrates on developing a manner of painting that places ever greater attention on the raw and immediate essence of the painting act. Viewers will find examples of his upside down paintings which made him world-famous and examples of his rough painting style of the 1980s and his exploration of Socialist Realism from the late 1990s.
Recently Bazelitz has taken up and redefined motifs from the early 60s in his "Remix" series. For the occasion of his 70th birthday, three paintings from this series will be shown at the Foyer.
