Exhibition Description:
This is the third solo exhibition of Rirkrit Tiravanija and Neil Logan at Galleria Emi Fontana. The exhibiton theme is based on the science-fiction novel "Foster, You're Dead" by Philip K. Dick. The artwork relates to the description in the short story of a family that is ridiculed because they cannot afford a bomb shelter. Tiravanija and Logan have constructed a site-specific installation in which the main topics of Tiravanija's work are explored and combined with the 1950s American Cold War atmosphere and futuristic imagery of an atomic aftermath.
Description:
A nomad from birth, in his work Rirkrit Tiravanija communicates his personal experience of constant cultural exchange. The artist's capacity for cultural adaptation and his interest in interpersonal interaction have led him to create work based on "relational aesthetics", the historical precedents of which are the 60s Fluxus and Happening movements. This allows art to reveal itself in the moment of its creation, and prompting the audience to take part in the artistic process. Rirkrit Tiravanija was born in Buenos Aires in 1961. He lives and works in New York. His work has been shown recnetly in prestigious exhibition contexts, including Manifesta, Rotterdam; MOMA, New York (1996); Centre Pompidou, Paris (1998); Venice Biennial (1999) to name a few. The artist Neil Logan was born in Detroit in 1959. He grew up in Paris and studied architecture at Rhode Island School of Design and Columbia University.
In 1992, Logan opened his own architectural practice in New York, fernlund + logan architects, with his wife and partner Solveig Fernlund. The firm's work has been widely covered in the press www.fernlundlogan.com . Neil Logan recently collaborated with Rirkrit Tiravanija on the design of his house in Chiang Mai.
