Exhibition Description:

Galleria Emi Fontana will be presenting Zen Ripper - Sterling Ruby's second solo exhibition at the gallery in Milan from 19 September to 10 November 2008 and Grid Ripper his first European museum solo-show at GAMeC, Bergamo which will open 30 September 2008 - 8 February 2009.

Sterling Ruby's artwork is concerned with the intersection between freedom and control, expression and silence, the individual and the communal. He works across disciplines using drawing, photography, sculpture, video and performance.

Ruby has created the Ripper trilogy, a three-part exhibition that will focus on sculpture and painting. The sculptural pieces consist of large Formica geometric forms, which have been spray-painted in a vandalism-abstraction that contrasts the minimalist hard edge with something atmospheric. He creates paintings in a similar stance; departing from recognizable urban graffiti Ruby has achieved a sense of depth through multiple layers of soft aerosol gestures.

Sterling Ruby was born in Bitburg, Germany in 1972 and now lives and works in Los Angeles. Since his first solo show at Galleria Emi Fontana (2006) Ruby's work has received international recognition. He has exhibited at prestigious institutions internationally. A survey of his work is being hosted at MOCA Los Angeles until 16 September.
