Artist Name: Íñigo Bilbao
Dates: DATES: 27.06.2008 – 29.09.2008
Website: http://www.laboralcentrodearte.org

Exhibition Description:

The exhibition includes five digital sculptures made of white, light-sensitive resin. Íñigo Bilbao made these sculptures using the data obtained after subjecting his models to a computed axial tomography. They depict the surface anatomy and the bone structure of the models and are mounted on surgical steel tables.

Bilbao has also created a three-minute loop filmed on high-definition video with quadraphonic sound, showing a sequence of biomedical images based on the information obtained from the CAT scans that had previously been carried out to create the prototypes.

Íñigo Bilbao uses medical tools and data used for diagnostic purposes and uses this information to sculpt people who find themselves in a state of helplessness one feels in the hands of medical practitioners.

Capturing what others don't see, Bilbao highlights the touching details that are overlooked by the radiologist who is focused on his work, as well as by the patient who is too concerned about the results.

Description:

About the artist - Íñigo Bilbao (Ribadesella, 1975) is interested in the connections between art, science and technology. He works on the representation of forms used in the fields of medicine and biology, through the use of digital media.

Bilbao received a CajAstur grant in 2005 that allowed him to make the leap into digital sculpture and he was able to use prototyping equipment to materialise his virtual works as physical pieces. Since 2007 he began experimenting with the use of medical scanners in combination with prototyping machines.

His has shown his work in Shanghai (White Collar, Island 6 Art Center), Barcelona (Autorretrato, ArtFutura, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona), Valencia (The Machine Manifesto, Observatori, Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe) and Gijón (Naturalezas Digitales, Sala Cultural CajAstur Monte de Piedad).
