Exhibition Description:
In his first solo show in Los Angeles, the Dutch artist Jasper de Beijer explores and celebrates the visionary excesses and sheer exuberance of the grand engineering projects of the Victorian era.
The 19th century has a combined reputation of stodgy pragmatism on the one hand and Romantic withdrawal on the other. However, at no other time in history, did people go to such great lengths to lend concrete form to their dreams. While creating fantastic monuments to the forces of progress and technology, like the Crystal Palace and the monster steamer Leviathan. The great engineers and builders of that age worked with manic energy to realise the most fantastic of schemes.
Jasper De Beijer has constructed detailed miniature scenes from paper and cardboard. Working in fragile, base materials, the artist does not strive to recreate the engineering feats themselves. Instead his work focuses on creating resonant, iconic images of the age of visionaries, capturing them with lighting and photography.
Part of this exhibition has been funded by a grant from the Mondriaan Foundation, the Netherlands.
