Exhibition Description:

Pakistan prides itself on its rich heritage, and struggles with the dilemma of how to deal with her history. Although the past can turn into a disturbing and often damaging force for all spheres of life, it also presents itself as an ideal solution or formula for challenging the present.

This exhibition includes the work of three artists who follow their own path in addressing Pakistan's past, its customs, and its pitfalls - and at the same time, all three have represented a strong step toward the future.

Each artist takes a unique approach to their art and its history that both challenges the viewer and allows for individual interpretations. Their work references the transformation of heritage as a means of identifying the urgency to address issues of violence, sexuality and stereotyping.

Farida Batool produces images that are gritty and unforgiving, by approaching Pakistan's history of conflict and violence with poignant photography that juxtaposes destruction against revitalization. The feeling of hope and life are unmistakable in her work, which expresses the larger idea: that of the past and the future.
