Artist Name: Allen Ruppersberg
Dates: 26 September – 23 November 2008
Website: http://www.camdenartscentre.org
Exhibition Description:
This is Allen Ruppersberg's first solo show in a public gallery. He will transform Camden Arts Centre's Gallery 3 with his new project based on 'Literatura de cordels' - pamphlets produced by travelling poets and writers in Brazil. 'Literatura de cordels' approximately translates to 'Stories on a string'. They are simply made booklets contain folk stories, poems and songs and are illustrated with wood cuts.
Ruppersberg's exhibition coincides with an exhibition by the 'father' of Californian assemblage, Wallace Berman (1926 - 1976), also showing at the Camden Arts Centre. Berman was a huge influence on Ruppersberg as well as other artists and poets emerging from the legacy of the Beat generation in the 1960s.
Description:
Exhibition: For this exhibition Ruppersberg has produced his own versions of 'Literatura de cordels' consisting of text and images from his extensive collections. These pamphlets are hung from the ceiling over a red, black and white floor piece titled Reading Standing Up (2004).
The text incorporated into the patterned floor is made up of oppositions such as us/them and left/right, compelling the audience to read aloud and form their own rhythm and sounds. It is Ruppersberg's interventions that transform Gallery 3 into a room for reading, recalling Camden Art Centre's former life as a library.
Allen Ruppersberg (b.1944 in Cleveland, Ohio in 1944) graduated from the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles (Cal Arts) in 1967. He has had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide.
