Exhibition Title: New Sculptures by John Atkin

Artist Name: JOHN ATKIN
Dates: 5 - 28 June 2008
Website: http://www.albemarlegallery.com

Exhibition Description:

John Atkin's heavy, metallic forms carry a powerful resonance, concentrating an echo, and dredging up for the spectator things already known to them subconsciously. This is why his work has a wide-ranging appeal, even for people who are not necessarily in sympathy with contemporary art.

Some of his pieces are clearly figurative, in the sense that they reference the human figure - others are less so. While his work has something in common with the work of David Smith, in their use of industrial materials and in the references they make to machinery, Atkin adds a unique, quirky sense of humour that is not usually present in Smith's work.

Description:

Recent achievements: John Atkin has been selected from over 2700 applicants to participate in the Beijing International City Sculpture Exhibition. Sculptors worldwide applied to the Beijing Municipal Government to participate in the exhibition, which takes place in the city's Olympic Park during the 2008 Olympic Games. From the original pool of applications, only 25 were chosen and Atkin was the sole UK artist commissioned.

This exhibition will also include the maquettes of the chosen work 'Strange Meeting' and those for Atkin's other large-scale public installations.
