Artist Name: Claire Barclay
Dates: 02 May – 29 June 2008
Medium: new sculptural installation using materials such as clay, wood, straw and metal.

Exhibition Description:

Claire Barclay uses inspiration from the context of Camden Arts Centre, the concept and architectural elements including the play of light. She utilises the knowledge and skills of both traditional craftsmen and industrial technologies, and in doing so, questions and experiences how things are made. Her installations are partly constructed in situ to produce intuitive compositions without a predestined plan. Resulting in a finished work that is often poised between making and unmaking. The artist also questions the marginalisation of some crafts and their commodification. At the same time Barclay's work illustrates how the hand-made object informs identity and is imbued with the energy of the maker. She intentionally exploits the physical qualities of materials to trigger emotional and psychological responses from the viewer.

Education and Training:

Claire Barclay was born in 1968 and graduated from the Glasgow School of Art. She continues to live and work in Glasgow. She has had a number of significant solo shows both in the UK and other European countries. She has exhibited at the Tate Britain in London in 2004 and represented Scotland in the 50th Venice Biennale in the exhibition Zenomap alongside Simon Starling and Jim Lambie. Barclay was also selected for the British Art Show 6 (2005), and was in the group show Early One Morning, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2002).
