Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp, the directors of Frieze Art Fair, have announced the appointment of the London firm Caruso St John as the new architects for their 2008 fair.
Adam Caruso and Peter St John established their firm in 1990 and have developed an international reputation for innovative design. They have won major international competitions including the recent commission for the expansive new Nottingham Contemporary.
Caruso St John are recognised as leading architects within the cultural sector. The firm was appointed to work with Tate Britain in 2007. They also gained critical acclaim for the New Art Gallery in Walsall in 2000, and public admiration for projects namely the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood in London.
Sharp and Slotover are looking forward to developing their unique tradition of collaborating with architects on key aspects of the Frieze Art Fair's design. "Caruso St John's wide experience of working with leading museums, galleries and temporary exhibition spaces makes them an ideal partner for Frieze Art Fair..." the directors commented.
Caruso has expressed that they are very pleased to be involved with the Frieze Art Fair this year. "We enjoy projects that are light on their feet and look forward to the challenge of making the spatial experience of the fair even more memorable and enjoyable..." he said.
Both Caruso and St John taught at the University of North London from 1990-2000. They were also visiting professors at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland from 1999-2001. Caruso became Professor of Architecture and St John a visiting professor at the University of Bath from 2002-2004. The duo taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in 2005, and are currently visiting professors at the ETH in Zürich.
