Exhibition Title: The Sum

Artist Name: Tal R
Dates: 02 May – 29 June 2008
Medium: large scale paintings alongside an installation of over 200 etchings
Website: http://www.camdenartscentre.org

Exhibition Description:

Tal R was born in Israel and lives in Denmark. By using a fixed colour palette, of seven colours:black, white, pink, green, red, yellow and brown, coupled with set dimensions, he challenges the fundamentals of painting. The artist often applies his colours directly from the tube. In focusing on graphic mark-making and collage, using characteristic blobs and small ‘worms’ of oil paint, Tal R achieves an overall effect that is childlike. Yet these exuberant surfaces hide the seriousness of their content. These influences range from the performances of Bas Jan Ader, the drawing of Matisse, The Holocaust, the intimacy of his own back garden and, most prominently, comic books and children’s doodling. His intimate etchings are executed with incredible speed and energy, revealing repeated images and marks used by the artist in a kind of dictionary of signs. Tal R creates an extraordinary range of artistic media including sculpture, music and books. Many of his self published artist’s books will be on display at the exhibition, as well as a new film in which he stars, ‘A Ship is not an Island’ (2007).
