Exhibition Description:
This is a group show featuring painting, sculpture and installation. Eleven artists have incorporated the theme of nature into their work while turning the gallery into a garden of Eden.
Artmaking like gardening can be an inherently optimistic and unpredictable activity. The works of the artists lead us into summer with a rich consideration of the beauty, complexity and release to be found in the garden.
Since the beginnings of human sensibility, artists have confronted the dilemma of being at one with and simultaneously apart from nature. Now, confronted with the spectre of a globally environmental collapse, the artists who choose nature as their subject continue this engagement, more mindful than ever of this essential and troublesome duality.
Our romantisized and mythic Eden may be lost to us, but it is now contingent upon all of us to nurture our bit of earth as best we can that we may all continue to live and thrive upon it. We are the gardeners of our planet, and like food we need it to survive.
