Exhibition Title: Because of Him
Artist Name: David McDermott and Peter McGough
Dates: Opening Friday, March 21 from 6 – 8 pm. Exhibition continues through April 26.
Medium: an exhibition of painting and sculpture
Website: http://www.cheimreid.com
Exhibition Description:
McDermott & McGough's new exhibition includes a series of eight photo-realist paintings of 1960s era televisions. They are composed of two separate scenes from different movies, one black-and-white and one color, stacked horizontally, the top scene seeming to bear weight upon the other and a new relationship or narrative is formed. The inevitable nostalgia of typical McDermott & McGough’s imagery lends a sense of cool introspection.
Curator Name: Cheim & Reid GalleryDescription:
The Contemporary artists David McDermott and Peter McGough, born 1952 and 1958 respectively, both attended Syracuse University in the 1970s. The duo met in New York in the 1980s and became known for their self-immersion in the Victorian era. They both lived, dressed and made art according to the limitations of the early 1900s. Their paintings, installations and photographs were fueled by this self-imposed time travel. Their techniques, subjects and styles used were also unique to the period.
