Artist Name: Jessica Jackson Hutchins
Dates: May 15 - June 21, 2008, Opening Reception: Thursday, May 15, 6 - 8 pm
Website: http://www.derekeller.com
Exhibition Description:
For her third solo show at the Derek Eller Gallery, Jessica Jackson Hutchins uses video, sculptural assemblage and ceramics to explore intimacy, compassion, and human frailty. The title combines values of Emily Dickinson poetry, part of Hutchins' wedding vows, and famously written words from the chest of Richard Hell on the cover of his 1970s punk album, "Blank Generation."
Hutchins sculptural works and video, both embody a sense of the monumental, intimate and personal. Further combining the monotony, as well as the contrasting, overwhelming emotion and frenetic energy of family with the extravagant beauty of childhood and suburbia. The theme then branches out to include politically topical works including Iranian World 12th Century Ewer - Into the Present, where the artist attempts to suture the flawed force of ancient history to her own.
